Listen - Act 1: Mindfulness - Scene 1

January 1, 2017

Following in the footsteps of The Dalai Lama, zen-master Thich Nhat Hanh and Winnie the Pooh, our young heroes embark on a journey of Mindfulness. But will their very first challenge be thwarted by their busy lives, short attention spans, and desperate attempts to grow their podcast audience?

‘Show Notes’ (yes, we're using that phrase)

Throughout this episode we mention a range of different resources, courses and books that might be of interest to anybody looking to get into Mindfulness. Here is a summary, so you don’t need to take notes while you listen.

Mindfulness Courses:

Most of this is Irish-based (and probably a little Dublin-centric) but we’re sure there are plenty of options around the world too.

Centre for Mindfulness Ireland: Darren and Dermot were both introduced to mindfulness originally by a wonderful one-day course run by Anne Twohig Wall. She runs the Centre for Mindfulness Ireland, you can read more about it and look for upcoming classes here: http://cfmi.ie/

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Dermot went on a 6-week ‘Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction’ (MBSR) course in Oscailt (www.oscailt.com) and really enjoyed it. This programme is offered in most mindfulness centres.

Meditation Retreats etc: The walking meditation retreat where Dermot learned humility was the Kalyana Centre for Mindfulness in Dingle, run by Eva Bruha:

www.kalyanacentre.com

We’ve also heard good things about these Mindfulness Centres where there are courses and group mindfulness sessions:

The Sanctuary: www.sanctuary.ie

The Dublin Buddhist Centre: www.dublinbuddhistcentre.org

Books and resources:

While a pile of mindfulness books on the shelf is great for impressing potential suitors, there are three that we have actually read and particularly enjoyed.

Mindfulness | Finding Peace in a Frantic World – Mark Williams: A great book that takes you through an 8-week introduction course in Mindfulness. This one is brilliant because from day one you are practicing meditation and mindfulness – no delay tactics here!

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari – Robin Sharma: More of a novel based approach to introducing the concept of mindfulness and meditation. A pretty good intro for anybody who hasn’t read much about it before and doesn’t have the patience for an 8-week course!

Waking Up - Sam Harris: Darren’s hero Sam describes this book as an introduction to spirituality without religion. Written by a neuroscientist who is one of the world’s most well-known atheists, this book could be an interesting for anybody who is put off meditation by any religious connotations.

We’d also both highly recommend reading anything by Thich Nhat Hanh.

Online (Apps and Podcasts):

Headspace: This app was the most mentioned recommendation from our listeners ahead of recording this podcast. Darren has done a few sessions with it previously and really likes the intro videos that guide you really simply through the ideas behind mindfulness. Definitely check this out: www.headspace.com

Tara Brach (a rival podcast!): Tara Brach is an American psychologist and proponent of Buddhist Meditation. She holds a weekly meditation class which she records and then releases as a podcast. Darren thinks they are lovely. You can just search for Tara Brach in iTunes or go to www.tarabrach.com

Hope these are all useful resources and that you are enjoying the podcast!
